Reducing Dust Mites in Your Home

Have you ever noticed that as time passes on those beloved stuffed toys and pillows that you choose not to replace and stayed in your home for about few months have become a source of allergens? Or that whenever you forget to wash them thoroughly, they became heavier? One reason for this is dust mites. Dust mites are arachnids which mean they are related to spiders. They are very tiny and feed on dead human skin and pet hair. These organisms cause allergic reactions because of the droppings they leave behind. They usually infest mattresses, pillows and stuffed toys.

How to get rid of dust mites, you may ask?  These animals can be very prevalent pests within the home that total eradication is quite impossible. This does not mean, though, that you cannot significantly reduce their numbers to a minimum in order to have an allergen free home. Follow these simple remedies to start bringing down these pests’ population fast:

Remedy 1: Bring the Humidity Down

Use a humidifier to turn down the humidity in each room of your house. Low humidity of about 35 to 50 percent will decrease the ability of dust mites to reproduce and increase their numbers. This is an initial step treatment as your objective here is to stop the population growth of these insects in your home.

Remedy 2: Freeze or Wash Your Beddings

Ensure the cleanliness of your mattresses and pillows at least once a week. Wash them in hot water with a temperature of at least 130 degrees Farenheit. This should kill all dust mites inhabiting these materials, and then use a hot dryer to finish off the cleaning cycle as well as any mite that may have survived the washing part. For the beddings that cannot be washed conventionally, place them in a plastic bag and put them in a freezer, this will kill of any dust mite inhabiting them.

Remedy 3: Dispose of Ageing Pillows and Stuffed Toys

Any pillows that are around 6 months old and cannot just be cleaned with standard cleaning method (washer and dryer method) need to be disposed of immediately. It is important to do this as these articles may be full of dust mite waste that it already adds to its weight. Exchange these with ones that can withstand being washed conventionally with a washer and dryer.

Remedy 4: Replace the Carpets

These are great breeding areas for these tiny creatures. You can either clean them with a steam cleaner to about 130 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure killing of the eggs as well or you can replace these carpets to vinyl floor boards, linoleum or tiles to prevent anymore spread of these pests.

Remember these miniscule animals thrive in a thick textile environment where dead skin and hair fall and eventually accumulate. It is ultimately recommended that you remove these breeding places from your home as these tiny pests can trigger an allergic reaction of anyone who gets in contact with them. The mere cleaning of these articles may not be sufficient in ridding you of dust mites. Invest in replacing them and in the end it will be more cost effective than constantly cleaning your carpets and beddings.
